One-third of Canadians are exaggerating their AI skills at work.
They’re blaming a lack of formal training alongside growing pressure to keep up as expectations evolve.
Data from TD’s recently released 2026 AI Insights report reveals that nearly 80% of Canadians believe adoption of AI tech within the workplace remains inevitable—yet a strong majority admit that they are still under-skilled, with just 4% giving themselves an “A” rating.
“AI is becoming more prevalent across the world of work but for many people it still feels new and unfamiliar,” offers Luke Gee, Chief Analytics and AI Officer at TD Bank Group.
“The pace of change can feel fast, and it’s natural that confidence takes time to catch up,” he suggests.
“We’re in a period where people are building new skills and figuring out how these tools can support the work they already do,” says Gee.
“What matters most is helping people feel supported as they learn, build confidence over time, and use AI in ways that are practical and meaningful to them,” he believes.
A majority of those who do use AI say it makes them more productive at their job, but only 37% report receiving adequate training on the technology, according to TD’s report.
“The future of work will require organizations to help people develop new skills as technology evolves,” says Melanie Burns, Senior Executive Vice-President and Chief Human Resources Officer at TD Bank.
“Those that prioritize learning and equip employees with the right tools and support will ensure their people thrive,” stated Burns.
