Coinbase Posits That AI-Powered Hiring Can Actually ‘Humanize’ the Process

July 23, 2025 by Knowlton Thomas

Coinbase is among the many major companies weaving artificial intelligence tightly into its hiring process.

The Silicon Valley crypto titan is actively adopting AI for recruiting purposes, says L.J. Brock, who serves the blockchain blockbuster as Chief People Officer.

One way that Coinbase is utilizing AI to capture ideal talent is using the tech to help screen an overwhelming number of job applicants.

In 2024, Coinbase received 1.7 million applications, of which less than 0.1% made the cut—a significantly lower acceptance rate than that of Ivy League universities.

In response, Coinbase developed an in-house application review tool that sorts and prioritizes relevant experience and skills using AI.

“The reality of the modern, corporate recruiting engine is that it’s nearly impossible to scale a Talent team to match applicant volume,” says Brock. “But AI can get us much closer by giving more applications a fair shot.”

Moving forward, Coinbase is also introducing AI-powered phone-based interviews.

“Applicants who pass resume review complete a 15-minute screen with an AI interviewer who evaluates job qualifications and experience, and answers candidate questions,” Brock explains of the tech that is currently being piloted. “We envision a world where every candidate starts their application with an AI interview, enabling them to immediately give a 2D pitch of themselves, whenever it’s convenient for them.”

Automated interview scheduling is another AI-powered feature being embedded into the hiring process, according to Brock, with plans to launch the capability later this year.

“AI will factor in interviewer preferences, adjust for conflicts, and even propose alternate panel members,” he says. “This isn’t just about saving time—it’s about eliminating the back-and-forth, allowing our recruiting team to focus on connecting with candidates and giving applicants more time to prepare for their calls.”

And, during interviews, AI will soon take notes and manage scorecards so Coinbase interviewers can remain engaged with their subject.

Brock admits that disruption will be part of the change—recruiter roles are “evolving fast,” for example—but is convinced that AI has the ability to “build depth and breadth in our selection process.”

“While some worry AI will dehumanize the hiring process, we believe the opposite,” he says.

According to Brock, the future of both talent acquisition and job-hunting “belongs to those who embrace this evolution, level up, and lead with human insight, powered by technology.”
