Amid a ‘Critical’ Shortage of Specialized Tech Talent, Employers Rethink Acquisition Methods

August 22, 2025 by Knowlton Thomas

Canada’s tech talent shortage has reached “critical levels,” according to a recent report from Mississauga recruitment firm Acara Solutions.

As the nation’s tech sector endures a “seismic shift,” the game is talent acquisition is being reshaped.

Nigel Hapuarachchi, who serves Acara as Vice President of Sales & Delivery, says Canadian tech companies are navigating are “triple challenge.”

That triple challenge consists of a skills shortage, in which the demand for specialized talent such as AI and cybersecurity is far ahead of supply, as well as budget constraints that limit companies’ ability to compete on compensation. Finally, technological advancement at “breakneck speed” is causing some to struggle to keep up.

All of these factors combine to form “a perfect storm,” says Hapuarachchi, who has observed trends emerge in response such as a “strategic shift toward contract workforce models.”

A rise in contract work is one trend he’s noticed, while another is the turn toward internal upskilling tactics as organizations rethink what workforce development means in the modern age.

Other methods being battle-tested in the current turbulent environment include remaining remote and hybrid as others return to office; enhancing benefits packages beyond the basics; and acknowledging the validity of newer credentials for emerging skills.

Overall, “the talent shortage is pushing employers to become more innovative in their recruitment approaches,” suggests Hapuarachchi. “Success in today’s Canadian tech hiring market requires a fundamental shift in mindset.”

He argues that, as the tech market continues to advance and transform sectors, employers must “embrace flexibility” and “think beyond salary” to sustain a competitive, adaptive workforce.

“Companies that adapt quickly to these new realities–embracing alternative hiring models, investing in their people, and getting creative with their approach–will be the ones that thrive,” stated Hapuarachchi. “Success in this market requires agility, creativity, and a willingness to fundamentally rethink how we approach talent acquisition.”
