A multibillion-dollar international firm this week unveiled a “major expansion” in Canada.
Germany’s Siemens confirmed that the expansion its Saskatoon-based research and development hub will see 10,000 square feet of new space.
Once the expansion is completed, the Innovation Saskatchewan Research and Technology Park will boast nearly 50,000 square feet of total space, with every square inch dedicated toward “enabling continued growth in AI software development for next-generation chip design.”
“The global semiconductor market is entering a historic phase of growth driven by AI,” posits Amit Gupta, who functions as chief AI strategy officer for Siemens Digital Industries Software.
As semiconductor designs become more complex, AI-enabled electronic design automation software plays an increasingly critical role in helping engineering teams manage scale and performance, according to Gupta.
Siemens’ investment in Saskatoon supports the development of AI capabilities that help customers design and verify advanced semiconductor systems more efficiently.
“The advanced AI software developed in Saskatoon helps customers tackle the most demanding chip design challenges,” Gupta says.
The expansion is expected to support the creation of up to 100 new highly skilled roles over the next two years, growing the local workforce to approximately 400 employees.
Recruitment will focus on software engineering and AI research talent.
Siemens also stated that it will continue collaborating with the University of Saskatchewan to support the regional deep-tech talent pipeline.
“This expansion reflects Siemens’ long-term commitment to Canada’s innovation ecosystem,” Gupta stated.
The Saskatoon site “is a standout example of how Siemens combines local talent with global scale,” believes Faisal Kazi, Chief Executive Officer of Siemens Canada, describing the technology park as “a strategic center of excellence that serves customers worldwide.”
“This expansion demonstrates our confidence in the Canadian tech sector and its ability to compete on a global stage,” he stated.
Federal Minister of Industry Mélanie Joly described Siemens’ expansion in Saskatoon as “another example of how strategic investments in innovation are creating opportunities for Canadian workers and strengthening our economic future.”
“This investment will create highly skilled jobs,” she noted, “and contribute to a stronger, more competitive Canada.”
Scott Moe, Premier of Saskatchewan, says the 100 new jobs will be “high-quality” as the province seeks to grow its tech-based workforce.
“By partnering with our world-class educational institutions and leveraging our skilled workforce, Siemens is helping to drive economic growth, create opportunity, and ensure Saskatchewan remains globally competitive,” stated Moe.
Siemens was founded in Berlin in 1847.
