For technology professionals, Victoria offers something different from Canada’s largest metropolitan markets. Its employer community is smaller and more closely connected, but it spans an unusually varied range of industries.

An engineer can contribute to medical devices, autonomous boats, water infrastructure or advanced manufacturing. Victoria’s defining advantage is the density of its technology community.

The region does not have the geographic scale of Toronto or Vancouver, yet it supports more than 20,000 technology workers and approximately 1,200 companies. VIATEC reports that the sector has expanded faster than the national average since its previous study and has established a goal of reaching $10 billion in annual revenue by 2030.

That concentration can make the ecosystem easier to navigate.

Founders, executives, engineers, investors, researchers and emerging professionals frequently encounter one another through the same industry organizations, post-secondary institutions and community events. A professional joining one Victoria company can quickly become connected to employers operating across several different sectors.

The city’s size can also give employees greater visibility within their organizations. Rather than working inside one division of a very large regional office, professionals may have opportunities to collaborate directly with founders, senior leaders and customers.

VIATEC’s marine-technology directory includes employers such as AML Oceanographic, Archipelago Marine Research, Helm Operations, MarineLabs, Rockland Scientific and SEAMOR Marine. Victoria’s ocean-technology ecosystem is reinforced by internationally significant research infrastructure.

Ocean Networks Canada is a University of Victoria initiative and a Major Research Facility of Canada. It operates ocean observatories and makes marine data available for research, monitoring and practical applications.

The organization connects physical instruments in difficult marine environments with software, communications, data management and scientific analysis.

That work requires multidisciplinary teams. Engineers develop and maintain observing equipment, technical crews deploy systems, software professionals manage information platforms, and researchers turn continuous streams of data into knowledge about oceans, climate and natural hazards.

The presence of Ocean Networks Canada also benefits private employers. Companies can recruit professionals with experience in marine data, sensors, communications and the practical challenges of operating technology offshore.

Victoria’s position as the capital of British Columbia adds a major employer category that is less prominent in most Canadian technology markets.

A central ecosystem organization can help professionals discover smaller companies that may not have the visibility of national technology brands.
