This morning, Meta announced the creation of a new Canadian engineering hub, to be based in Toronto, and plans to hire up to 2,500 new employees for remote and in-office positions across Canada over the next five years.
The majority of roles are expected to span across building extended reality experiences and Meta technologies. The expanded presence will include establishing Meta’s first Canadian WhatsApp, Messenger and Remote Presence engineering teams and growing its Canadian Reality Labs and AI Research teams.
The announcement was made at Meta’s Toronto office. Meta executives were joined by Hon. Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario, Hon. Victor Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, Hon. Kaleed Rasheed, Associate Minister of Digital Government and creator communities.
“We welcome this exciting announcement from Meta, creating thousands of jobs and propelling the regional economy,” said Stephen Lund, CEO, Toronto Global. “Companies, like Meta, are making long-term bets on the Toronto Region, leveraging the fastest growing tech talent workforce in North America and forging partnerships with world-class postsecondary institutions.”
The Canadian hiring spree is meant to advance Meta’s plans to build a metaverse, an emerging and interactive world making use of virtual and augmented reality to help people connect, enjoy entertainment and conduct business.
