Much of last year in tech was marked by layoffs, from fledging local startups with limited reserves to some of the biggest tech titans on earth in Amazon and Meta, and hiring remains slow.
Still, this is tech—wherever there is a downside there is also an opportunity.
For all the doom and gloom, companies across Canada are actively hiring. This includes a variety of international firms seeking expansion in Canada.
Let’s highlight some of those firms who have signalled their intent to expand through Canada’s top-rated tech talent in 2023.
Teknol in Alberta
Silicon Valley startup Teknol recently announced that it is expanding its presence to Canada with a new office in Calgary.
Teknol’s software platform, PREto3.com, is dedicated to simplifying management processes in early childhood education.
The company’s Canadian expansion will bring $12.5 million and 125 new jobs to Alberta over three years, according to a statement from the company.
Invest Alberta joined the firm to announce that it will be relocating its entire engineering and support teams to Calgary, a move that underscores the city’s growing reputation as a North American tech hub.
“Teknol’s expansion into Calgary is yet another example of the exciting momentum we see in Alberta’s technology sector,” stated Nate Glubish, Minister of Technology and Innovation.
“Alberta continues to attract innovative startups like Teknol who bring their progressive concepts to Alberta’s technology and engineering ecosystems,” added Rick Christiaanse, CEO of Invest Alberta.
Sage in Vancouver
British multinational enterprise software company Sage is doubling down on its commitment to Canada with new offices in Toronto and Vancouver.
The financial technology giant for small and mid-sized businesses will be moving to the Waterfront Hub at 601 Hastings Street in Vancouver and the bustling Scotia Plaza at 40 King Street West in Toronto by the end of 2024.
“We are thrilled to announce two new Sage offices in Toronto and Vancouver,” stated Mark Hickman, Managing Director for Sage in Canada. “These bold office moves are a testament to Sage’s continued investment in Canada, bringing us closer to major business hubs and enabling an elevated and modern office experience for our Sage colleagues.”
Vancouver’s Waterfront Hub will house 18,745 sq. ft. of Sage office space across two floors, while in Toronto’s Scotia Plaza, Sage offices will span 15,000 sq. ft.
“We are dedicated to supporting the economic growth of Toronto and Vancouver,” Hickman said, “and continue to be known as a world-class company delivering solutions that help businesses thrive.”
Cyclr in Toronto
UK-headquartered Cyclr recently expanded to the North American market with a new office in Toronto.
Cyclr is an embedded platform-as-a-service company that sells a software integration toolkit to other SaaS companies.
Launched in 2018, the company’s embedded iPaaS solution expands a SaaS company’s native integration capabilities without adding to its development backlog, remaining invisible to its users and saving hours of time.
With more than half of Cyclr’s revenue coming from the North American market, expansion into Toronto was a natural step for the company.
“From day one it was clear to us that the cultural fit between Cyclr and a highly cosmopolitan Toronto would be strong,” said Fraser Davidson, who serves as chief executive. “The talent pool is impressive and the environment conducive to building Cyclr even further as an innovative tech organization.”
