Amazon this month released its year-end report for the Canadian market.
The 2024 report, “How Amazon is Investing in Canada,” shows that Amazon now employs more than 46,000 people across Canada.
That figure includes over 8,000 technology roles, which are spread primarily across Amazon’s two Canadian tech hubs—Vancouver and Toronto—as well as a smattering at the company’s robotics operations in Alberta.
The Vancouver hub houses 4,500 employees, while the Toronto hub employs 3,500, according to Amazon’s report. Within these tech hubs is an array of tech-forward departments, from Amazon Web Services and Amazon Ads to Alexa and Prime Video.
Amazon promises Canadian workers competitive pay, leading benefits coverage, and a group RRSP plan. The company also signalled its intent to further “upskill the Canadian workforce.”
“People from all walks of life come to Amazon to develop their career,” the report reads, “and we invest in programs that help both our employees and Canadians learn critical skills to move into in-demand, higher-paying technical or non-technical roles within Amazon and beyond.”
For example, recognizing the need for a more technical workforce, AWS “has been focused on making AI and machine learning skills training and education accessible to everyone through efforts including AI and ML- focused programs, scholarships, grants, and AWS Certifications.”
The firm has also partnered with PwC to empower tech students.
Over $50 billion has now been invested by Amazon into Canada since 2010, including infrastructure and compensation to employees.
