The global youth unemployment rate is in the double digits and Canada is no exception.
Out of Oakville, Geotab is in the business of connected vehicle and asset solutions, leveraging data analytics and AI to enhance fleet performance and safety while optimizing costs.
The Canadian tech company is also hustling to build and maintain a pipeline of student intern positions in the tech field to help address the nation’s youth employment concerns.
Through Geotab, interns engage in real-world projects, develop skills, and explore career paths while working alongside professionals. The program is open to students looking to fulfill co-op or internship work-term requirements in engineering, software development, and data and analytics programs, alongside business and marketing, according to the firm.
And in addition to the post secondary oriented Campus program, the newer High School Outreach Program offers high school students “a glimpse into what it is like to work at a leading tech company.”
“It’s been terrific to both learn from the students and see their growth and career development over the time they work at Geotab,” says Klaus Boeckers, who serves Geotab as chief people officer.
Over the past five years, Geotab has created more than 800 intern positions, offering programs designed to help early career talent from universities begin their journey in the working world. Those internships have resulted in more than 70 full-time positions within the organization.
“The Campus Program emphasizes learning and networking, along with social events and opportunities to practice new skills,” comments Boeckers. “It’s our way of helping students gain meaningful work experience, while building a talented, energetic workforce that keeps us fresh and forward-thinking.”
Geotab was named one of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People this year for the second time. The organization’s culture is “rooted in a set of values which includes ‘doing the right thing,’ and that means providing opportunities for the next generation to get started in their careers and shape the future,” according to Boeckers.
“We focus on building and maintaining meaningful relationships with our hiring teams and interns, creating an experience that supports personal growth and sets the stage for long-term career opportunities within the company,” added Tharsiga Selva, Geotab’s Campus Talent Team Lead.
