Twitter has big plans for Toronto.
Today they announced that they will be building their first Canadian engineering team, based out of the Twitter Canada office in downtown Toronto, with dozens of new members joining the social media giant in the coming months.
Twitter has been building strong roots in Canada since their office first opened in 2013 and these new engineering hires will complement Twitter Canada colleagues within their sales, partnerships, policy, marketing and research teams.
The plan will see at least two dozen roles posted on their careers page in the coming days and weeks with more roles to come in 2021.
The initial hires in Toronto will be within their Discovery & Connection, Health and Content teams.
The mission of the Discovery and Connection org is to help users connect with people, conversations, and interests. The mission of the Health organization at Twitter is to maximize safety and minimize societal & individual harm for everyone. The Content team builds tools and experiences that enable our customers to easily create content on our platforms, both in text and media.
Why Toronto? According to Twitter it came down to three factors – top talent emerging from local universities like University of Waterloo and U of T, the diversity of city as a market with residents of many different backgrounds, and the city’s large talent pool in the areas of design, media and marketing.
Twitter’s hiring team, based in their San Francisco HQ, will be led in part by two University of Waterloo grads: Vivek Trehan (director of engineering – conversation health) and Tristan Jung (senior engineering manager – Notifications).
Twitter’s head of engineering Mike Montano is also Canadian, a University of Toronto graduate.
