Canada’s largest tech hub has earned a spot on global index of 30 cities that are ideal for careers in tech.
The list from cloud intelligence platform CloudZero spans the globe, featuring cities from Switzerland (Zurich in 8th), Thailand (Bangkok in 13th), and Japan (Tokyo ranks 2nd), as well as the United Kingdom and United Arab Emirates.
With the sixth-most tech job openings and the tenth highest average tech salary, Toronto ranks 15th on the list as the sole representative of Canada.
The region has nearly 6,000 open roles available in tech, according to CloudZero data, and pays an average salary of more than US$74,000.
Tokyo has the most tech jobs available (over $36,000) but pays a low average salary, while the US pays the highest ($148,000 in New York)—though in most cases, higher salaries merely cover for a region’s higher cost of living, rent-to-salary ratios reveal. Even so, US pays techies better.
The index shows that Toronto has nearly 3,000 tech companies—far less than Washington, D.C. (8,000) or London (10,000) but more than Bangkok, Copenhagen, and Seoul combined.
“With industries racing to digitalize, the world is seeing a high demand for tech workers,” stated Bill Buckley, Senior Vice President of Product and Engineering at CloudZero. “From startups to established companies, skilled professionals are being sought after to meet their needs, particularly in cloud computing, software engineering, and artificial intelligence.”
In August, International Workplace Group determined that Toronto is the world’s best place for a “workation.” Toronto, ranking ahead of icons New York and Beijing, scored high for accommodation, happiness, and a wealth of flexible workspaces.
Canada’s largest city is 25% covered in forest, providing green spaces for relaxation amidst bustling urbanity, the report noted. On the downside, Toronto’s cost of living—including the price of a coffee at the cafe where you want to work—is very high.
