Behind the Payroll: Borderless AI’s Umesh Maini on Real-Time Payments and Crypto-Native Payroll

August 13, 2026 by Robert Lewis

As companies become more comfortable hiring beyond their home markets, the challenge is shifting from finding global talent to building the financial infrastructure needed to support it. For Employer of Record platforms, that means ensuring workers are paid quickly, reliably, and compliantly—regardless of borders, currencies, or local banking systems.

Umesh Maini, Chief Product Leader at Borderless AI, believes payments are what distinguish the company in an increasingly crowded market. Rather than treating payroll as a feature layered onto an international hiring platform, Borderless AI has made real-time payments, compliance, and crypto-native payroll central to its product.

Maini brings more than a decade of experience building payment products for SMB and enterprise customers. Before joining Borderless AI in 2023, he held product leadership roles at Buckzy Payments, TD Bank, Western Union, and Nokia, specializing in cross-border payments, foreign exchange, and payroll infrastructure.

In our conversation, Maini explains why an EOR is only as strong as the banking infrastructure behind it, where stablecoin payroll is gaining traction, and how Borderless AI is using automation to make global employment faster without compromising compliance. He also discusses the growing enterprise adoption of EOR services and the company’s ambition to make global payroll feel as seamless as local banking.

There’s no shortage of Employer of Record platforms right now. What’s the main differentiator for Borderless AI?

UM: It really comes down to payments, not hiring. Plenty of companies can help you hire someone in another country. The hard part is getting them paid quickly, reliably, and in their own currency. That’s where we think we’ve built something different. We’ve made real-time payments a core part of the product, not an add-on. Today, employers expect payroll to move fast. They don’t want employees waiting days for money because it’s stuck in the traditional banking system. Whether someone is across the border or across the world, they expect to get paid the same day, sometimes within minutes.

On the payments side specifically, what products have you seen real adoption with so far?

UM: The biggest shift has been real-time payments. Employers notice the difference immediately when their international teams get paid in real time instead of waiting days for traditional cross-border rails to clear. A big part of making that possible is having a strong network of trusted banking and payment partners around the world, which helps us move money quickly, reliably, and securely across markets. The other trend that’s really accelerated is Crypto-Native payroll. We’re seeing more companies with distributed teams choose stablecoin payouts to solve real issues around slow local banking systems or currency volatility. What started as a niche request is now becoming a core requirement for modern teams, which is why we’ve built Crypto-Native payroll directly into our platform to give global talent more flexibility in how they get paid.

How much does the banking infrastructure behind an EOR determine the customer experience?

UM: It is fundamental. An EOR is not simply a software product; it depends on the ability to execute compliant, reliable, and traceable payments across different banking systems, currencies, and regulatory environments.

Our role is to bring those capabilities together through a connected technology layer and a network of banking and payments partners. We coordinate local payment rails, treasury and FX requirements, compliance screening, risk checks, and exception management so that the process feels seamless to the customer.

That orchestration is what enables a faster and more predictable experience without requiring customers to understand or manage the complexity behind every international payment.

Global payroll means global compliance. How do you balance moving fast on product with the regulatory complexity of operating in dozens of countries at once?

UM: That’s the fundamental tension in global payroll. You can build a sleek user interface, but if you get withholding, labor classification, or cross-border regulatory logic wrong, speed doesn’t matter. The way we handle it is by embedding compliance directly into the payment infrastructure itself, rather than bolting it on afterward. Because our team brought deep compliance expertise from day one, including advisors who led global compliance at Visa, PayPal, and Amex, we built real-time AML screening, risk decisioning, and distinct EOR versus contractor flows directly into the engine. Because that regulatory logic is baked into the rails from the start, we don’t have to trade off speed for compliance.

You’ve spent time at banks, at a telecom, and now at an AI-driven EOR platform. How does that background shape how you think about product?

UM: Every one of those stops taught me a different piece of the same puzzle. Banking at TD Bank taught me risk management and regulatory discipline. Cross-border payments at Western Union and Buckzy taught me speed, FX, reliability, and the economics of moving money at scale. When money moves across borders, it has to work perfectly every single time, but the infrastructure also has to be efficient enough to scale. Telecom at Nokia taught me how to navigate complex international systems in emerging markets.

Bringing those instincts together is how we build Borderless AI. We move fast and leverage modern AI and automation to operate highly efficiently, which means a relatively small team can move money globally without the overhead of traditional financial infrastructure. But we never lose sight of the fact that we are handling people’s paychecks. That requires real-time reliability, deep regulatory compliance, and financial infrastructure people can trust.

Where is the growth coming from for Borderless AI right now — is it established markets or emerging ones?

UM: Both, but one of the biggest shifts we’re seeing is in the type of companies adopting global employment infrastructure. Historically, a lot of the demand came from SMBs that needed a fast, flexible way to hire internationally without building entities everywhere. Now we’re seeing much larger enterprises get comfortable with the model and adopt it at scale.

Geographically, emerging markets are still especially compelling from a product perspective. When companies hire across Latin America, Southeast Asia, Africa, or Eastern Europe, the limitations of legacy cross-border payments become much more obvious. A three-day delay or high intermediary fees can have a real impact on employees. That’s where our real-time payments engine and crypto-native payroll options tend to see the fastest adoption.

Established markets like the US, UK, and Europe remain foundational, but growth is increasingly coming from both larger companies embracing the EOR model and demand across emerging corridors.

Looking ahead, what’s next on the product roadmap?

UM: The focus is increasingly on banking. We’re expanding real-time payment coverage and giving workers around the world more ways to actually use their money, including through our mobile app, where they can manage funds and pay bills directly. The goal is to make global payroll feel as seamless as local banking by digging deeper into the core local banking rails like UPI in India, PIX in Brazil.
