Canada is making investments in British Columbia build a more skilled workforce, the government announced recently to the tune of $3.7 million across four projects in the province.
The announcement kicked off British Columbia Economic Development Week and includes $3.2 million for three projects funded through PacifiCan’s Community Economic Development and Diversification program and $500,000 for one project through the Regional Innovation Ecosystems program.
“During Economic Development Week, we are shining a spotlight on B.C.’s thriving businesses and vibrant communities,” stated Harjit Sajjan, Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada.
“Investing in innovation, strong communities, and our workforce is laying the groundwork for prosperity for British Columbians today and well into the future,” the federal minister continued.
British Columbia is home to industry-leading innovation, world-class destinations, and thriving communities, according to the Government of Canada, which claims to be “supporting economic growth that will help B.C. businesses and communities thrive now and for years to come.”
More than 600 businesses are expected to benefit in total form these investments, which are forecast to create over 1,200 jobs.
The investments announced induce nearly $1M to the Work Wellness Institute, where funding will be used to design, deliver, and maintain an “Inclusive Workforce Development Program,” which will provide businesses with tools and best practices.
More than $500,000 is earmarked for the Agrarians Foundation, where the capital is slated for the Grow-A-Farmer program to support agriculture entrepreneurship in BC.
With half a million dollars from Canada, local climate company Synergy will help businesses on Vancouver Island and Sunshine Coast transition to a circular economy while driving innovation and collaboration through regional hub development.
And finally, Clear Seas received $1.75M for the Indigenous Marine Career Advancement Program to increase Indigenous participation in maritime-related industries through career advising, mentorship, job placement, and hands-on experience.
