Google Expands Upskilling Program with Launch of ‘AI Professional’ Course

May 26, 2026 by Knowlton Thomas

As artificial intelligence evolves, “so must our efforts to support the workforce,” says Sabrina Geremia.

Geremia, who serves Google Canada as Country Managing Director, reflected in a recent blog post that “the conversation has fundamentally shifted” from people asking about AI technology to people asking about how to use it.

To unlock Canada’s economic potential, she believes workers must be equipped with “the essential AI skills to grow their businesses and careers.”

It’s not a brand new idea.

“Last year, as part of our efforts to bring AI skills to more than two million Canadians, we launched our $13M AI Opportunity Fund, and we introduced the Google AI Essentials course to help Canadians grasp the foundational concepts of this technology,” Geremia highlights.

But things change—quickly.

“We’re building on our AI skilling offerings for Canadians by launching the Google AI Professional Certificate, a new course from ‘Grow with Google,'” she says.

While Google AI Essentials helps beginners get started with the basics, Geremia says the AI Professional Certificate “is designed to help learners master the skills to use AI as a collaborative partner in their daily work, equipping people with the applied, in-demand skills that employers are looking for today.”

Through hands-on activities, learners discover how AI can become their professional partner, assisting with deep research, content creation, and more.

The entire certificate can be completed in under 10 hours, according to Google, and learners walk away with “a job-ready portfolio of AI projects.”

And, in what Geremia describes as “a first-of-its-kind offer,” the organization is also providing learners in the course with three months of free access to Google AI Pro, because “the best way to learn AI is by doing.”

So far, more than 64,000 Canadians have graduated from Google’s Career Certificate programs.
