Walmart to Close Toronto Tech Hub, Relocating Employees to U.S. Central Hubs

May 17, 2024 by Robert Lewis

Walmart is shuttering its Toronto tech hub, according to the Wall Street Journal.

As part of the company’s broader push to lay off and relocate workers across North America, some Walmart employees in the Toronto tech hub will be asked to move to central hubs in the U.S.

Walmart announced plans to launch a Walmart Global Tech hub in Toronto in 2022 in an effort to continue accelerating technology and further digital capabilities across the retail sector. Walmart had identified Toronto as a talent-dense market and the ideal location to expand its operations.

At the time, Suresh Kumar, Walmart’s EVP, Chief Technology Officer and Chief Development Officer, said they planned to make Toronto one of their major Walmart Global Tech hubs, with plans to create several hundred new tech jobs in the next 12 months.
