Cohere has committed to creating at least 1,000 new Canadian technical jobs by 2030 as part of a planned federal equity investment of up to $1.6 billion in the Toronto-founded artificial intelligence company.
Announced today, the investment will support Cohere’s development of advanced AI models and products, computing capacity, and Canadian workforce. Private investors participating alongside Ottawa include NVIDIA, Bell, and Schwarz Group.
The hiring commitment accompanies plans to invest at least $1.7 billion in additional computing infrastructure in Canada by 2030. Cohere will also maintain its Canadian incorporation and headquarters, support domestic research partnerships, and create opportunities for students and recent graduates.
The announcement follows Cohere’s opening of its first Ottawa office, which TechTalent.ca covered earlier this month. Located near Lansdowne Park, that office serves approximately 30 employees working across engineering, infrastructure, security, and sovereign AI.
“Canada is home for Cohere,” co-founder and CEO Aidan Gomez said when announcing the Ottawa expansion.
The federal investment will be made in stages, with regular reporting against Cohere’s Canadian employment and investment commitments.
For Canadian technology professionals, the announcement establishes a substantial hiring target over the coming years. The government release does not specify how the new positions will be distributed across cities or when individual roles will open.
